#WCW Kamala Harris – An Exclusive By Myla Dalbesio
WHY WE LOVE HER:
As Attorney General of California, Kamala Harris eliminated the state’s entire backlog of untested rape kits (for the first time ever), and helped develop a new method for processing kits which cuts the time requirement down significantly. Boom. Mic drop. That alone is enough to make us crush pretty hard. But Kamala has much more than that under her belt, and is making advancements all over. She also, as the District Attorney of San Francisco, started a program in which first-time drug offenders were given the opportunity to pursue a high school diploma and secure a job, rather than going to prison. She has repeatedly advocated for reform of the justice and prison system, countering the hard-line “tough on crime” approach touted by Reagan and Bill Clinton with rehabilitation and reeducation programs.
Kamala has a reputation for fighting for the underdog, like homeowners who fell victim to wrongful business practices by the major mortgage firms during the 2008 financial crisis. Taking up a case for them against the five largest firms, she brought a whopping $20 billion settlement to Californians. And speaking of 2008, that was the year Proposition 8 passed, which Kamala refused to defend. In case you don’t remember, Prop 8 was an approved ballot measure that banned gay marriage in California. Declaring it unconstitutional, Kamala’s decision to reject the ban helped lead to the reversal of the measure itself.
Raised within the civil rights movement (she attended marches in a stroller when she was just a baby), Kamala is a revered proponent of the Black Lives Matter movement, and is now the first black woman serving on the senate in 17 years (and only the second ever elected). We’re not surprised by the chatter going around that she has the potential to be the next female presidential candidate. If she keeps up with the momentum she’s already built, she’ll certainly have our vote. Taking the time to explain the wage gap to teen girls doesn’t hurt either.
