And yet again Uber makes the new’s for all the wrong reasons. However this time it isn’t really as much their fault as maybe it is of a data analytics and user data sharing company, ‘’. This weekend in a report taken out by the New York Times, it was revealed that the email decluttering service had been offloading important user data to Uber to help it analyze when a customer was leaving it for its competition – Lyft. had been providing that info to Uber by downloading the user’s Lyft receipts from their email and passing it on for an unknown fee.

Once news got out, users weren’t too happy to find out how has been utilizing their data. CEO Jojo Hedaya, took to social media to undertake some damage control, expressing his apologies through the company blog on Sunday. He said, “it was heartbreaking to see that some of our users were upset to learn about how we monetize our free service.” He claimed that the terms and conditions of using the service had been clearly outlined and available for all to see, in “plain-English”, however admitting that the company could have done a better job of being more transparent.

Users were quick to attack the CEO, calling his note a non-apology and demanding that all their data be destroyed once they’ve cancelled their account. The decluttering service company is yet to respond to its users queries. Meanwhile, one twitter user displayed an interesting find about the company’s T&C page, which doesn’t allow users to link to any part of their webpage except for their main homepage.



While Google’s mail application – Gmail – is known to mine data through your email as well, the biggest difference lies in the fact that Google utilizes that data to sell you advertising as a user, as opposed to providing a third party with information about your preferences. The closest Google has come to providing its Gmail users data is when in 2015 it launched a tool which allowed companies to directly target ads based on the users country of residence, of sorts.
