Homemade: Takoyaki

Takoyaki is a japanese snack, which are small balls filled with octopus. Its presumed they were invented in the Kansai region (Osaka) where street vendors sell them in small stalls around the city. I got to try them out in a restaurant in Tijuana, where my local lolita comm used to hangout. I totally fell in love with them. 

The original reciepie includes several ingredients a bit hard to find in my city. Besides that you must use a special grill to cook the balls, but for this at home experiment you are highly encouraged to use a cackepop machine instead!

Ingredients

Flour
2 Eggs
Water
Salt
Oil
Pepper
Chopped chive
Teriyaki Saucce
Chopped Octopus
Mayonaise

Use a bowl to mix 1 cup of flour, 2 eggs and 1 1/2 cup of water. Stir until you get a semi-liquid mixture. Add salt, pepper and the fish flavor cube. Stir again to incorporate the ingredients.

Cooking the octopus:

Get 2-3 cups of water in a pan. Risen your octopus with water and put throw it in the pan. Add salt, pepper, a bit of onion and some chili. Or you can purchased it pre-cooked at your local supermarket.

Preparation:

Heat your grill or cakepop machine, with a napking apply cooking oil to all the holes. This will prevent your takoyaki to burn or get stuck. With a spoon throw the mix in every hole on the grill. Introduce an octopus cube and chive. Wait a minute and turn your ball 90 degrees. Wait another minute and turn again. This will get you the balls.
WORD OF ADVICE: Don’t panic!!! Chances are you won’t get it just right the first time. You need patience and practice. Wait 10 minutes for them to cook. Turn from time to time.
